Rufus windows problem fix

16 July 2013 7 Comments

Rufus (if you don’t know) is an awesome tool for creating bootable USB drives from ISO images.

I Used it many times and it went flawless but this time it didn’t get past the first operation, and in the log it gave me this error:

“A device was eliminated because it didn’t report itself as a non fixed USB disk”

I don’t know what that even means, and there is no google hits for it.

Anyway, i fixed it by formatting the USB drive to file system FAT then with Rufus did it normally and it created it smoothly (NTFS).

    Hi Ali,

I’m the author of Rufus, and I’d like to find out more about this error, so that I may be able to fix it in a next version.

Do you have the full log of that first operation? The error about “non fixed USB” occurs during re-enumeration, AFTER formatting (be it successful or not), so it doesn’t tell me much about why the formatting operation failed. Usually this can be addressed by enabling “List fixed drives” in the advanced options (or simply using Alt-F), but somehow I get the feeling that this isn’t your issue.

I would very much like to know what type of USB drive you were formatting (was it an USB flash drive? And HDD?), what version of Rufus you were using (v1.3.4 was released yesterday – have you tried with it?), and the type of ISO you were trying to use for the formatting. It may also be worth to run a bad block check (which Rufus can do), to find out if this may be an USB hardware issue.

Also, if possible, can I ask you to report you issue on the official Rufus tracker on github: https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/issues?

As you will understand I can only fix issues that I’m aware of, and if users only report them on their blog, it makes it a lot more difficult for me to try to locate and fix them!

    PS: Cool blog 😉

First sorry for not reporting it via the official channels, big fail on my part.
And i apologize but i didn’t save the whole error report.

The problem happened out of the blue while trying to put the windows ISO, i just quick-formatted the USB drive (Transcend 8GB USB2.0 jetflash drive) to NTFS (using windows) after that i ran Rufus and chose the ISO and it started it’s magic and threw that error then the USB partition icon was showing but it was acting like not formatted (windows was asking do you want to format it) – then i formatted it to FAT32 then ran RUFUS and it ran normally.
Sorry if i can’t help much i just saw your reply now and i don’t remember more about it.

Thanks for you your comment and your awesome work on Rufus, it rocks!

I had the same issue. I was able to resolve it by right-clicking the executable and running it as administrator.

    Hi Pete,

Congrats for this awesome tool !

I used it many times on my computer. Now I needed to install Windows XP on a week and old computer. I used Rufus on a guest session on a computers lab in my university… maybe there are restrictions in rights on Windows 7 because of that.

And here the complete logs about the 2 USB devices I put :

    Rufus version:
    Syslinux versions: 4.07, 5.10
    Windows version: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit

A device was eliminated because it didn’t report itself as a disk
Found USB device ‘SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB Device’ (0781:5567)

For me, formatting the USB drive was not usefull. It’s still not appear in Rufus lists.

Hi Author I was trying to boot my USB for Windows 10 but it gave an error in the middle and now I am unable to use my USB drive. If I try to format it it gives error “USB is write protected” and if I try to Open it directly it gives error “Corrupted or Unreadable” Please help me out

The sounds like the USB is damaged physically (AKA Bricked)

Hey i’ve got the same problem as Jalib, with 2 USB sticks on windows 10 i tried and one is like write protected, it can be formated sometimes but dunno if it’s real or fake and the second is working nice but fail when trying to format with rufus too.
